My Literacy Story
Reading books was something I enjoyed since I was a little girl. We never had a place in our home that was filled with books. Other than my school books, the only books available were Dr. Seuss books collection (I had read a least three hundred times already) and magazines that were usually there because the mail lady delivered them to the wrong house. When this happened, I felt as though I ha just won the lottery. I would read the magazines and imagine myself being the person in the feature aticlre. My family was amazed at how well I could read at such an early age. From this point on, I was seen as "different" in my family.
Writing has always been something I got pleasure from even more than reading ever since I could remember. When I was about four years old, I remember my older cousin, Tina, introduced me to writing. She would sit my two cousins and I at the kitchen tables, give us a piece of paper with "three letter" words on it, and tell us to copy down exactly what we saw. During this process, she reminded us to "stay in between the two lines" which was, for me, the most challenging task. It wasn't until I was told I would get a treat that I took writing between the lines seriously. I quickly mastered this technique and would often get two cookies instead of one.
From here, my literacy journey began...
